Student Finance for a Second Degree in England: 2026/27 Rules and LLE 2027
Published by EduForYou · Updated 3 October 2026
Short answer: A second degree in England is not automatically fully funded. For a course starting before 1 January 2027, Student Finance England normally funds a first higher-education qualification, with limited exceptions for certain courses and circumstances. For most eligible courses starting on or after 1 January 2027, the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) can support study at the same or a lower level, but previous publicly funded study usually reduces your remaining Tuition Fee Loan amount. Your course, provider, residency and personal history still matter. See the current SFE eligibility rules and the LLE eligibility rules.
Scope: This guide concerns Student Finance England. Different rules apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Check your course's actual start date before using the relevant section. Last fact-checked: 3 October 2026.
Can I get student finance for a second degree in 2026/27?
Usually, Student Finance England supports a first higher-education qualification, even where you paid for earlier study yourself. A graduate may nevertheless get limited support for an eligible new course. GOV.UK names topping up an HNC, HND or foundation degree; certain part-time Honours, joint Honours or integrated master's courses in agriculture, biological sciences, computer science, mathematical or physical sciences, technologies, medicine and allied subjects, veterinary surgery, and qualifying architecture (MArch RIBA Part 2); and certain healthcare courses starting on or after 1 August 2017. The exceptions have course-specific conditions. Being interested in one of these subjects does not by itself establish funding for your particular programme or study mode. Read GOV.UK's second-degree exceptions.
Previous study can affect the number of years of Tuition Fee Loan available even if you did not finish a course. Student Loans Company gives a typical calculation: length of the new course + one year − years of earlier study. Available tuition support is usually applied to the final years. For example, with two years of previous study and a new three-year course, fee-loan support may begin in year two; any Maintenance Loan remains a separate eligibility question. Personal reasons for leaving an earlier course may justify an additional year, subject to evidence and individual review. See the official previous-study examples.
What changes for a second degree under LLE from January 2027?
For most eligible courses beginning on or after 1 January 2027, the LLE allows funding for qualifications at the same or a lower level, including a second undergraduate degree. The published standard Tuition Fee Loan entitlement is up to £39,160 at current rates, equivalent to around four years or 480 credits of full-time study; it is a loan limit, not a cash grant or an automatic amount available to every graduate. Previous government funding for fees is usually deducted, potentially adjusted for inflation. Even fee-free previous study can reduce the balance by the equivalent fee value. Your online account can show an estimate, but the Student Loans Company confirms the official entitlement after an application. Read the eligibility and previous-study rules.
Normal eligibility is for 30 to 180 credits per year on a designated course with a qualifying provider, subject to residence, age and the other published criteria. A maximum of £9,790 per 120 credits is published at current rates; the actual amount varies with the provider and course and may not cover the entire tuition fee. Do not assume that a full three-year second degree will be covered just because the total standard entitlement is £39,160. Check the official loan limits.
What if I have used my previous entitlement?
Priority additional entitlement (PAE) may provide an extra Tuition Fee Loan after the standard entitlement is used for a full course leading to professional qualification in medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, certain allied health professions (such as physiotherapy and radiography), initial teacher training or social work. Individual modules do not qualify for PAE. Separately, special additional entitlement (SAE) may apply to certain longer courses or periods such as a foundation year, placement or year abroad. Neither is a blanket exemption for every Health and Social Care or teaching-branded course. The official Notification of Entitlement, not the online balance estimate, states what you receive. Compare PAE and SAE on GOV.UK.
Can I also receive a Maintenance Loan?
Under the LLE, you normally need at least £1,587.50 of remaining Tuition Fee Loan entitlement and to attend the course in person for a Maintenance Loan. Certain longer degrees can qualify after the standard fee entitlement is used. Distance learning has a limited disability or long-term illness exception. The amount depends on credits, weeks studied, household income and where you live. The published maximum for up to 30 weeks of study is £15,415 per course year, not a guaranteed award. If you qualify for PAE or SAE, you can still apply for maintenance support, subject to its rules. See the maintenance conditions and examples.
Does a second healthcare degree receive the £5,000 NHS grant?
The NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF) is supplementary support, not a replacement for tuition and maintenance loans. Under its 2026/27 rules, eligible students on designated pre-registration nursing, midwifery, allied health profession and certain dental hygiene/therapy courses may receive a non-repayable £5,000 Training Grant per academic year. Eligibility includes being eligible for the available both tuition-fee and maintenance loans from SLC, ordinarily resident in the UK, studying at an institution in England and actively studying. Part-time awards are proportionate. A separate £1,000 specialist payment is restricted to named subjects; other provisions have their own criteria. Pharmacy or healthcare-science students may have access to travel/accommodation support but not automatically the Training Grant. Having a first degree does not prove you qualify for the LSF. Read NHS LSF 2026/27 rules.
How do I check and apply?
- Confirm the date and course: obtain the provider's exact qualification, accreditation, attendance mode, credit load and start date. Ask the provider whether the specific course is designated for SFE or LLE; do not infer eligibility from the subject label alone.
- Gather your history: record every year of earlier higher education, prior public funding (including studies abroad where relevant) and any evidence of compelling personal reasons for interrupted study.
- Check the official route: for a pre-2027 start, use the existing SFE rules; for a start from January 2027, create an LLE account to view a provisional balance and read the LLE criteria. Ask SLC if an exception or PAE/SAE might apply.
- Apply through the right service: the government says applications for January–July 2027 LLE course starts open at the end of October 2026, with starts from August 2027 opening in spring 2027. Check the live timetable before applying.
Our LLE 2027 checker is an indicative pre-check, not a decision from SLC. For the broader policy, read the LLE 2027 guide. You can explore Computing courses or Health & Social Care courses, but always verify the exact provider, study mode and funding designation.
Frequently asked questions
Will Student Finance fund a second degree in any subject?
No. Before January 2027 the normal restriction and limited exceptions apply. Under LLE, same- or lower-level study may be eligible where you have remaining entitlement and meet course, provider and personal criteria. A course title alone cannot establish eligibility.
Can I get a student loan for a second degree if I paid for my first degree?
Possibly, but self-funded or fee-free study can still affect the rules. Under the earlier system previous years of study matter; under LLE even prior fee-free study can reduce the entitlement by a current equivalent. Ask SLC to calculate your actual balance.
Is a second psychology or computer science degree automatically funded?
No. Some part-time computer-science degrees can fall within pre-2027 exceptions, but course mode and provider must qualify. Psychology does not become funded simply by being a second degree. Under LLE either subject may be considered where the designated course and remaining entitlement qualify; neither is automatically a PAE professional course.
Does £39,160 mean my second degree will be free?
No. It is a maximum standard loan entitlement before possible deductions for earlier study, and you repay amounts borrowed under the applicable terms. Tuition fees can exceed the available loan.
Can I get both a Tuition Fee Loan and the NHS Training Grant?
Potentially, for a specifically eligible healthcare course and student. NHSBSA requires eligibility for both SLC tuition and maintenance loans among other conditions. Check the 2026/27 NHS LSF rules and your provider; do not assume all healthcare degrees receive the grant.
