Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) 2027: funding and how to apply

England's LLE starts for eligible courses from January 2027. Check application dates, £39,160 tuition entitlement, previous study, credits and maintenance rules.

Short answer: Create an LLE account in September 2026 to see an estimate of your balance; funding applications for January–July 2027 starts open at the end of October 2026, and for starts from August 2027 in spring 2027. The published standard tuition-loan entitlement is up to £39,160 for a new eligible learner at 2026/27 rates. Neither the estimate nor this guide guarantees finance.

When does the LLE start, and when can I apply?

The Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) is England's new student-finance route for most eligible courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027. If you started your current course before that date, you generally continue with the existing student-finance system for that course.

For courses starting from January to July 2027, GOV.UK says applications open at the end of October 2026. For courses starting from 1 August 2027, applications open in spring 2027. You can create an LLE student-finance account now to view an estimate of your remaining tuition entitlement; this is different from applying for funding.

Apply for each course or module and reapply for each year of a longer course. Even existing Student Finance England account holders need a new account for LLE funding. The application deadline is the earlier of the last day of month nine of your course year or the course or module end date. Check the official application service before acting, as dates can change.

How much Tuition Fee Loan is available?

A new eligible learner can access up to £39,160 in total tuition-fee loan entitlement at the published 2026/27 rates, broadly the equivalent of four 120-credit years at the current £9,790 maximum per 120 credits. This is a borrowing ceiling, not a grant, a guaranteed payment, or proof that a specific course is fully funded.

The amount for a given course depends on credits, the provider's fees and designation, and support already used. Tuition not covered by a loan may need to be paid separately. Certain longer or priority qualifications can attract additional entitlement under defined conditions; a zero standard balance is not a universal rejection or a universal exception.

Can I apply if I already studied or have a degree?

Potentially, yes. A prior degree or a second qualification at the same or a lower level does not automatically exclude you. Previous government support for tuition is usually deducted from the standard total, and the deduction can reflect inflation. If you previously studied without paying tuition fees, an equivalent amount can still be deducted. Self-funded, mixed-funded and pre-2012 histories need a personal assessment.

The official LLE account can show an estimate of the amount you have left. The Student Loans Company (SLC) decides the actual balance and eligibility; an EduForYou checker cannot retrieve your SLC record. For detailed scenarios including a second degree, HND or master's, see our specialist guide below.

Which courses and credit loads qualify?

Funding covers most designated level 4–6 qualifications, some integrated master's and specific level 7 courses, and eligible modules. A standalone postgraduate master's or doctorate generally uses a different funding service. The provider must meet Office for Students requirements and the specific course or module must qualify; a place on a university prospectus is not proof of LLE designation.

You normally need 30 to 180 credits in a course year; 120 credits is a typical full-time bachelor's year. Modules do not all qualify automatically. Verify your exact course, provider, start date, credits and attendance format before applying. Nationality and residence can affect whether you receive both loans or tuition-fee support only, including some pre-settled-status cases.

Can I get a Maintenance Loan?

Maintenance support has separate rules. GOV.UK says you normally need at least £1,587.50 of tuition entitlement left and in-person attendance. Distance-only study does not normally qualify for maintenance, with a limited exception where disability or a long-term illness prevents attendance. Some courses longer than four years have separate rules.

The published maximum is up to £15,415 for a course year of up to 30 weeks; your actual amount depends on location, household income, credits and study weeks. If you study fewer than 120 credits, maintenance is generally proportional. Do not assume the maximum is your personal award.

Repayment and your next step

Loans are repayable. GOV.UK currently states that LLE repayment begins after leaving or completing the course and earning above £25,000 annually; loans are written off 40 years after the April when repayment first becomes due. These rules should not be confused with the terms of older student loans you may already have.

Start with your official LLE account and your provider's course details. Use the EduForYou pre-check to organise questions about prior study and potential courses, then confirm your exact funding with SLC. EduForYou provides free admissions guidance, not student loans and not a funding approval.

Common questions

Are applications open now in September 2026?

You can create an LLE account and view an estimated tuition balance, but GOV.UK says funding applications for courses starting January to July 2027 open at the end of October 2026. For courses starting from August 2027, applications open in spring 2027.

Does a previous degree stop me from using the LLE?

Not automatically. Previous publicly funded tuition usually reduces your balance, but your exact position and the course's eligibility must be checked by the Student Loans Company.

Is £39,160 free money?

No. It is the current maximum standard tuition-loan entitlement for a new eligible learner, not a grant or a guaranteed award. Student loans must be repaid under the applicable rules.

Can an online course receive living-cost support?

An eligible online course may qualify for tuition support, but a Maintenance Loan normally requires in-person attendance, subject to limited exceptions for disability or long-term illness.
