Student Loan 2027 in England: 11 LLE Rules If You Have Studied Before
Published by EduForYou · Updated 30 Sep 2026
Direct answer
You may still qualify for LLE funding after a bachelor’s degree, HND or other previous study. Your total previous credits do not automatically disqualify you. The amount of previous public tuition support, your new course, provider, residency and new annual credit load are the key factors.
From 1 January 2027, the Lifelong Learning Entitlement becomes the main student-finance system for most eligible level 4–6 courses starting in England. If you have studied before, the useful question is not only “Do I already have a degree?” It is how much public funding did I use, what entitlement may remain, and is my new course eligible?
This guide explains the 11 rules most likely to change the outcome. For an indicative personalised check, use the EduForYou LLE Checker. Student Loans Company makes the final decision.

LLE 2027 at a glance
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Start date | Most eligible courses starting on or after 1 January 2027. Applications for January–July 2027 starts open at the end of October 2026; for starts from August 2027, in spring 2027. |
| Standard entitlement | Currently up to £39,160 for a new learner, broadly equivalent to 480 credits at the maximum rate. |
| Previous study | Previous public support for higher-level tuition is normally deducted. |
| Annual credits | You normally need to study between 30 and 180 credits in a course year. |
| Maintenance Loan | Normally requires in-person attendance and at least £1,587.50 remaining fee entitlement. |
1. The LLE starts with courses beginning from 1 January 2027
Existing courses started before that date normally remain on the existing funding route. Most new eligible courses starting on or after it use the LLE. GOV.UK says applications for January–July 2027 starts open at the end of October 2026; for starts from August 2027, in spring 2027. You may create an account in September to view an estimated balance; that is not the funding application.
For the full application timeline and a general overview, see our English LLE 2027 guide.
2. The standard entitlement is currently £39,160
A new learner may access up to £39,160 in tuition-fee entitlement at current rates. It is a financial limit, not an automatic payment. Per-credit fees, provider status and previous support can change the amount available.
3. A previous qualification does not automatically exclude you
The existing Equivalent or Lower Qualification restriction is removed under the LLE. You can use remaining entitlement towards an eligible qualification at the same or a lower level.
4. Previous public funding normally reduces the balance
Public support received for higher-level study in any UK administration may reduce the balance. The official example of a typical publicly funded three-year degree leaves an indicative £9,790 at current maximum rates, but Student Loans Company calculates the personal figure.
5. Self-funded study is treated differently
For post-2012 study paid without Tuition Fee Loan support, the SLC FAQ says the learner would retain the full LLE entitlement. Pre-2012 study can receive a reduced deduction even where it was fully or partly self-funded.
6. Previous credits are not an automatic cap
Having completed 240, 360 or more credits does not by itself cause refusal. Credits measure learning volume; previous public funding drives the balance calculation. Two people with the same number of credits can therefore have different balances.
7. New study is normally 30–180 credits per course year
Student finance normally requires at least 30 and no more than 180 credits in a course year. A full-time bachelor’s year is usually 120 credits. Eligible modules may be bundled to reach 30 credits when they share the same parent course and meet the official conditions.
8. Not every course or module qualifies
The provider must meet Office for Students requirements and the course must be designated. Initial modular funding focuses on defined priority subject groups. Confirm the exact course with the provider before relying on funding.
9. Maintenance Loan has separate rules
The current guide normally requires at least £1,587.50 of fee entitlement remaining and in-person attendance. The amount also depends on household income, location, credits and study weeks. GOV.UK currently states a maximum of up to £15,415 for a course year of up to 30 weeks, subject to circumstances.
10. Online study may receive fee support, but usually not maintenance
Some designated online or distance courses can receive Tuition Fee Loan funding. Maintenance Loan is normally unavailable without in-person attendance, apart from limited disability or long-term-illness exceptions.
11. A zero balance does not always end support
Priority additional entitlement can fund defined full courses including medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, allied health, teacher training and social work. Special additional entitlement can cover limited longer-course situations. These are not general exceptions for every course.

Do my previous credits determine eligibility?
Not as an automatic exclusion. Previous credits and previous funding are different. Public tuition support is especially important to the balance; the new study year normally needs 30–180 credits.
Can I get funding for a second degree?
You may qualify if you have entitlement remaining and the new course is designated. Defined priority courses may receive additional entitlement even when the standard balance is zero.
Can I apply if I already have a master’s?
A master’s does not create an automatic yes or no. The funding route, date and country of study matter. A standalone postgraduate master’s should not be confused with an integrated master’s or the specific postgraduate courses included under the LLE.
Can I get Maintenance Loan with a small balance?
The current guide normally requires at least £1,587.50 remaining and the balance must be used for the course receiving maintenance support. Residency, attendance and course rules still apply.
Can I study only 20 credits?
Normally not as the only funded volume in that course year. It may qualify when bundled with another module from the same parent course to reach at least 30 credits.
Does the EduForYou Checker guarantee funding?
No. It is an indicative pre-check based on public rules. Student Loans Company determines the official balance and eligibility.
